What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic focuses on maintaining your health naturally to help your body resist disease. Chiropractic is a health care profession that concentrates on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system, and how these disorders effect general health.
Chiropractors use spinal manipulation and other manual therapies to restore proper alignments of the body musculoskeletal structure particularly of the spine that will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
How is chiropractic adjustment performed?
A chiropractic adjustment or manipulation involves using the hands or a device to apply a controlled force to joint to restore function, reduce inflammation and pain, and also prevent injury in the future. Chiropractic manipulation is highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following the treatment.
What the Science Says
What conditions chiropractor treat?
Researchers have studied manipulation for a number of conditions raging from back, neck and shoulder pain to asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and headaches. Much of the research has focused on low-back pain, and has shown that spinal manipulation benefit people with this condition.
A 2010 review of scientific evidence on manual therapies for a range of conditions concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilization may be helpful for several conditions in addition to back pain, including migraine and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches, neck pain, upper- and lower-extremity joint conditions, and whiplash-associated disorders. The review also identified a number of conditions for which spinal manipulation/mobilization appears to be helpful including fibromyalgia, mid-back pain, premenstrual syndrome, sciatica, and temporomandibular joint disorders.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, is very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after they do some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.
Doctors of chiropractic education typically includes four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education, including courses in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology and etc. once accepted to chiropractic university four to five academic years of professional study are the standard. Doctors of chiropractic are educated in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition, rehabilitation and more. Before they are allowed to practice, doctors of chiropractic must pass national board of examinations and become state licensed.
